RNWLG Represents Oregon State University in Pac-12 Litigation
Oregon State University (“OSU”) retained RNWLG attorneys, Matthew Mensik and Max Archer, as its local counsel in the litigation it filed with Washington State University (“WSU”) against the Pac-12 Conference, the then-Conference Commissioner, George Kliavkoff, and the University of Washington (“UW”), which intervened in the litigation shortly after its commencement. OSU and WSU commenced the lawsuit in Whitman County Superior Court (see Case No. 23-2-00273-38).
RNWLG Prevails at Trial in Spokane County Will Contest Case
Riverside NW Law Group, PLLC trial attorneys Matthew Mensik and Max Archer prevailed in a will contest trial. RNWLG represented the personal representative of an estate, and successfully defended the estate against a petition (brought by a son of the decedent) to set aside the decedent’s will based upon claims of undue influence and lack of testamentary capacity.
RNWLG Wins Appeal Underscoring Plaintiffs’ Rights to Their Day in Court
Matthew Z. Crotty and Asti M. Gallina recently achieved a substantial victory in a complex case involving the Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD). The case centered around a father who had filed a lawsuit against a private school for retaliation. The father alleged that the children’s school had retaliated against him due to his advocacy efforts on behalf of his special-needs children.

Kacy's journey is one of dedication, commitment, and outstanding achievements. A native of Spangle, Washington, he joined the United States Marine Corps directly out of high school and deployed twice to Iraq as an infantry machine gunner. While in law school, Kacy published a book, Freaks of a Feather, recounting his experiences in the Iraq war. His book received the prestigious Eugene Sledge Award, which is presented for the best memoir published during the preceding three years.

She earned her J.D. from University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly Hastings College of the Law), where she graduated magna cum laude. Lindsay also recently earned her LL.M. in taxation from New York University. She is licensed to practice in both Washington and Idaho.
Riverside Law Group Prevails in Whistleblower Hearing
Riverside Law Group, PLLC trial attorneys Matthew Crotty and Matthew Mensik obtained a second trial win in as many months. RLG represented the former Director of Human Resources at a public hospital district who asserted whistleblower retaliation against the hospital after she was terminated for reporting her concern that a hospital executive may have engaged in improper governmental action. RLG’s client reported to the hospital’s board of commissioners her concern that the executive may have (1) improperly accessed and disclosed HIPAA-protected patient information; (2) attended a job interview while on hospital time without taking personal leave; and (3) made discriminatory comments based on national origin.

Riverside Law Group, PLLC trial attorneys Matthew Crotty and Matthew Mensik prevailed after a four-day sexual harassment trial where the jury awarded the Plaintiff $530,750 (Boyd v. ACRO, Inc. d/b/a Chico's Pizza Parlor).
Riverside Law Group Obtains $1.5 Million USERRA Class Action Settlement
Riverside Law Group, PLLC's obtained a $1,500,000 settlement for class members in a USERRA matter against FedEx. RLG's lead class action attorney Matt Crotty served as co-counsel in the case, which alleged that FedEx discriminated against military reservists by failing to pay employees who took short-term military leave. The proposed settlement is pending court approval. Importantly, the settlement amount does not include payment for attorneys' fees, which will be litigated separately, ensuring that the greatest portion of the award go directly to the affected class members.
Riverside Law Group Secures Bench Trial Victory in Public Records Act Suit
On December 8 & 9, 2022, Riverside Law Group’s Casey Bruner served as co-counsel in a Public Records Act bench trial. He was asked to assist on the case shortly before the trial date after the prior co-counsel needed to withdraw. Casey was asked to assist in the trial due to his trial experience and his knowledge of Washington's Public Records Act. On February 24, 2023, the trial court issued its decision in favor of Riverside Law Group’s client, the requestor, and held that the government defendant failed to timely provide public records and timely respond to public records requests. The victory marks Riverside Law Group's third trial victory since its formation in November 2022. Riverside Law Group prevailed in a partnership and employment dispute in November 2022 and in a federal jury trial regarding constitutional violations in January and February 2023.
Ninth Circuit announces new standard for assessing whether military service members are entitled to benefits under USERRA.
The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) recognizes that those who serve in the military should be supported, rather than penalized, for their service. USERRA requires employers to provide employees who take military leave with the same non-seniority rights and benefits as their colleagues who take comparable non-military leaves. See 38 U.S.C. § 4316(b)(1); 20 C.F.R. § 1002.150(a).
Riverside Law Group Obtains Jury Verdict against DSHS Investigator for Constitutional Violations.
Riverside Law Group’s trial attorney Michael Love successfully obtained a jury verdict on behalf of his clients in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington for constitutional violations under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The jury of 8 people awarded $160,000 in compensatory damages and $15,000 in punitive damages. Michael Love was asked to take this case, which was previously proceeding pro se, by the Federal Bar Association for the Eastern District of Washington due to his extensive trial experience.

Riverside Law Group's Matt Crotty obtained an appellate victory before Division III of the Court of Appeals for the State of Washington in a discrimination and retaliation matter. Riverside Law Group represented a worker who was discriminated and retaliated against on account of his disability/L&I claims. Riverside Law Group won the case at an arbitration for the client. The defendants appealed and asked for a trial de novo, but in doing so, failed to follow the statutory process. Since the defendant did not follow the proper appeal process, Riverside Law Group argued the appeal was improper and should be stricken. The trial court grated that request and Division III affirmed the trial court’s decision.
Riverside Law Group successfully defends local employer at trial.
Matthew Mensik and Asti Gallina of Riverside Law Group, PLLC successfully defended a local small business and its owner at trial in Spokane County Superior Court in November of 2022. The plaintiff asserted several partnership and employment related claims against Cadable, LLC, a local Managed IT company, and its owner, seeking a partnership buyout, unpaid wages, and repayment of a $20,000 loan. Mensik and Gallina appeared on the case less than four months before trial, dismissed a key partnership claim on summary judgment, then tried the remaining claims to a twelve-person jury during a week-long trial. The jury found against the plaintiff on his employment related claims and only award $5,000 to the plaintiff for unjust enrichment.
